Desde el final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los tratados de libre comercio han complementado el sistema multilateral de comercio. En principio, regulaban principalmente los aranceles, pero de forma paulatina se han ido incorporando nuevas temáticas, incluyendo la protección de los derechos laborales y de la perspectiva de género aplicada al comercio. Estos temas han tendido a regularse en el ámbito de la cooperación, sin obligaciones sustantivas que puedan ser objeto de solución de controversias. Pero tratados recientes en que ha participado Chile, como el CPTPP, permiten aplicar sanciones comerciales para asegurar su ejecución efectiva.

Since the end of the Second World War, free trade agreements have complemented the multilateral trade system. At first, they mainly regulated tariffs, but new topics have been included progressively, including labour rights and gender perspective. These issues have tended to be treated as areas of cooperation, without substantive obligations that can be pursued through dispute resolution. However, recent treaties in which Chile has participated, including notably the CPTPP, allow for trade sanctions to ensure
their effective implementation.
